Who This Is For
Mission agency care leads, sending-church missions pastors, and founders building field-family infrastructure. Useful when you already carry two or more sent households and the care system is still a group chat. Skip if you only need a prettier prayer letter or a ChMS missions module.
The Startup Insight
Cocoon (YC Winter 2019) built a private app for one small group of up to twelve people: relatives and close friends who already shared a life. The feed mixed photos and short notes with automatic signals like steps and battery level, so distance felt closer to living under the same roof. Founders Sachin Monga and Alex Cornell left Facebook to chase that kind of intimacy. Product craft was strong. Most families still stayed on free chat and photo tools that came with the phone, because every household member had to switch before the room felt alive. Substack hired the team in 2021 and left the app independent.
The Ministry Translation
A mid-size sending church already funds three families overseas. Ana, the missions pastor, keeps a WhatsApp thread, a quarterly prayer-letter list, and a birthday spreadsheet. Field kids' school photos land in the same chat as donation reminders. Supporters see a polished update. The household lives in the same thread as the ask. Sending-Family Ambient OS is a licensed private room for each field household plus a small home care circle: low-pressure photo and voice drops, scheduled care check-ins, kid and rest prompts, and security modes that keep location and identifiable detail off by default on sensitive fields. Agencies buy seats and a playbook. Success looks like field families who still feel known after year three, counted in active care weeks and families retained.
Why this made the brief. Home-side care for sent families sits next to diaspora corridors and immigration process on the Global Mission shelf. The billable job is care ops and field security defaults, because free chat already covers casual ambient sharing.
What To Do With This
This week
Name one sent household and the three to five people who actually carry them at home. List where their photos, check-ins, and crises live today.
This month
Run a four-week concierge room (Signal or a private album is fine) with security defaults written down: what never gets shared, who is in the circle, how often someone asks about rest and kids.
This quarter
Package the room as a licensed OS with an agency playbook and a paid care-seat. Pitch two sending churches or one agency on underwriting the first twenty households.
